Are you serious?  This is incredibly racist and patronizing. A white teacher indoctrinating the tribals? This is reminiscent of the europeans “civilizing” the “heathens.” I like a fair number of your other designs, but this one is so racist, even in how the bodies of the people are shaped and how they are dressed.  I totally agree that lack of education worldwide is a very important issue, but this image sends the wrong message, namely that literate people are better than illiterate ones.  Give me a break.

I am not being racist. This design is not about caste, creed, race or colour. This design has nothing to do with race. It is about literacy and the poor tribal people worldwide being cheated and not given their due
because of lack of education. As, I have already mentioned in my design that pharmaceutical companies are exploiting the tribals of their knowledge and not paying them anything, not even a single penny in return and this design is hinting about this issue and not about being black or white. Still, extremely sorry if I have offended anyone but once again I must press on the fact that this design has nothing to do with gender, caste, creed or race.

Illiteracy in indigenous tribes does not equate a lack of education, but a different type of education. Also, poor by your standards may be irrelavent by another person’s cultural values. Ask a folklorist or cultural anthropologist. I agree with strwbrwyfieldsforever. This is incredibly prejudicial, whether you intend it that way or not.

It is not prejudicial. Why don’t you understand a bigger meaning attached with the design. It is not about caste, creed, race and colour. It is about the exploitation of the knowledge of tribal people, the herbal and medicinal knowledge that they are aware of and the oppurtunity that they are not given to make money out of it by many pharmaceutical companies and many other people who use their knowledge but are not ready to share the profits made out of it.The design is made with an intention that even tribals should be made aware of the value of money and the power it possesses and an equal oppurtunity to grow rich and in turn help their community and only education can do that.

I hear what you’re saying in your written explanations, but none of that is in the design. In your design you have a white teacher instructing english, with black children in tribal dress. That’s all that’s there. There is no reference to herbal and medicinal knowledge. There is no reference to exploitation. There is no reference to the value of money. What you’re saying and what you’re drawing are two totally different things.

The design is about teaching the tribals and educating them so that henceforth they too would know the value of money and start making money by their knowledge in herbal medicines which they know the best. Education starts from the letter A itself and hence I have shown the alphabets here and the recognition of things for which I have used an apple as example and from the design point of view the teacher is explaining that the fruit shown is “Apple” and it is written as follows I.e. Apple. This design explains both recognising things and educating the tribals. And regarding the teacher, there is nothing such as white teacher and black teacher. A teacher is one who teaches and imparts education, whether he is black or white and there should be no problem with the skin colour.

Let me explain why this design is important for tribals from literacy point of view. A few days back, I came across an article, “Neo-rich grabbing Yeoor land”. These neo-rich people have bought the nearby lands by using their influence and might and have payed peanuts to the tribals residing in that area and why is it happening so, is because of lack of literacy. So, if these tribals are literate, then they will know how precious money is in this present world and what money can buy for them.

i tend to agree with strwbrwyfieldsforever etc.  You may not mean it that way, but obviously from the feedback that’s the message that is received from your design. Before I read your description and the comments i would have had no idea what your intention was. Definitely reminiscent of slave days… Your written ideas and passion about exploitation are wonderful but I think you can come up with a better and clearer design than this.

About My Design:

Half of the world’s population according to statistics are illiterate. This design shows that even tribals should get education because I personally feel that many people in this world are exploited like for eg. I have personally seen that tribals who are aware of herbal medicines are exploited to the hilt by pharmaceutical companies and ayurvedic doctors
who use their knowledge and mint money heavily without they getting anything in return.
