ICOGRADA WORLD DESIGN CONGRESS 2009
Join professional colleagues in our bi-annual gathering to reflect on the past, examine the present and look into the future of communication design.

Under the theme Xin, the Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing will explore the capacity of design to integrate with other media, to transcend national, cultural and economic confines, and to benefit the world at large.

XIN Manifesto
Literally signifying human speaking and hence message/letter in Chinese, Xin-信represents a primitive means of communication. Yet today XIN has come to encompass more dimensions than ever before:
Xin-xi (Information) human communication
Xin-nian (Vision) designing a better world
Xin-ren (Trust) understanding and collaboration
Xin-yong (Creditability) reliability and responsibility
Xin-xin (Faith) believing in hope

Through the theme of XIN-信, Icograda World Design Congress 2009 Beijing seeks to explore the contemporary issues and challenges facing communication design. The Congress attempts to address these issues and challenges in four dimensions throughout the three days of its international conference:
A(ccess) design democracy and accessibility
B(alance) unity, harmony
C(ommunicate) information and cross-cultural communication
D(efine) design of the future and for the future

The UN General Assembly instituted World Development Information Day in 1972 drawing attention of world public opinion to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them (resolution 3038). The Assembly was DISTURBED by the issues and decided that the Day should coincide with United Nations Day, 24 October, which was also the date of the adoption, in 1970, of the International Development Strategy. 24 October is also the first day of XIN Beijing. The General Assembly believed, like designers, that improving the dissemination of information through communication design and the mobilization of public opinion, particularly among young people, would lead to greater awareness and cooperation in solving the problems of international development.
