Activism Greets Buenos Aires Commuters

John Hitchcock, a printmaker that teaches at the University of Wisconsin, has organized a unique project in Argentina that takes activist themed printmaking into the public space - the Buenos Aires Metro system.
Objetivos Moviles or Moving Targets was exhibited on the Metrovías system on February 29. Fifty up-and-coming artists (25 South American and 25 North American), and fifty established artists, were invited to create prints dealing with activist messages. These individual prints were then grouped on large mobile banners that could be carried through the streets, metro stations and trains. The banners' final destinations were the Proyecto'ace Studios and Centro de Formación y Edición Gráfica de Buenos Aires, were they have been put on display.
Moving Targets is a public art technique that has been used in other countries, though this is apparently the first time in South America. Its purpose is to evoke the rich tradition of printmaking as a vehicle for expression, discontent and critique. It also attempts to show art as a dynamic, unstoppable force that has the ability to shape public opinion.
