 GRIST ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS

We really like Grist.org out of Seattle, WA. It's a little skewed toward US content, but still has something for everyone, and their writing style is spot on.

We really love the wide variety of design competitions that the DESIGN21 Social Design Network runs — many in partnership with UNESCO for their events and celebrations.

The design competition for the UNESCO 2009 Mother Language Day (February 21st) Poster is one more example of artists from around the world taking a real interest in social communications, with over 1,100 entries received from 85 countries. Here are a couple of the winners, but be sure to visit the competitions page at DESIGN21 to see more.

An Overview of International Mother Language Day,
from the DESIGN21 website:

-------------------------------------------

Languages are essential to the identity of groups and individuals and to their peaceful coexistence. Only if multilingualism is fully accepted can all languages find their place in our globalized world. However, within the space of a few generations, more than 50% of the 7,000 languages spoken in the world may disappear. We must act now as a matter of urgency.

In November 1999, the General Conference of UNESCO proclaimed 21st of February International Mother Language Day. This Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic diversity and multilingualism.
